*John Case/Erastus Case Papers:

Erastus Case Papers are located at the Connecticut Historical Society (says not to be used for publication without their consent) in Hartford, Conn. I received from another researcher and not directly from them.

Erasus Case wrote over a thousand letters in early 1900's to Cases and the letters he received back are what he used to compile, they are referenced at the bottom of these Family Group Sheets. Lots of handwritten had been added.

{{Note: wedding date listed on Erastus Papers for Wm Case and Charlotte Barham was the same date that Wm Case and Charlotte Case witnessed 1794 deed for Daniel Barham - see notes for Charlotte}

*Heritage of Rockingham County, North Carolina Story # 323 DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT MARTIN BARHAMby Frances Barham: Robert Martin Barham was born July 4, in Wake County and died July 17, 1941.

The name Barham was probably once "Bear-ham" then changed to the present Barham - (ham) meaning settlement.

Barham is a small village in the village in the vally below Barham Downs in Kent, England. It is six miles South of Canterbury off Dover Road, which is probably the oldest road in England.

The first existing record of the Barham name is that of Warine de Berham, June 15, 1203. He held land as knights service, as one of the military tenants of the archbishop in 1210.

....Charles, son of Katherine (Filmer) Barham born circa 1626 in Kent, England. Charles became the first Barham in America - financed by his brother, Robert IV and Filmer grandparents. Barham became prominent in Virginia and many descendants are still in the area. Robert V was an Oxford graduate and his Filmer marriage to Katherine only added more kings, queens, courts, princeses knights, etc. to the Barham ancestors. Charles himself became one of the wealthiest men in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry County, Virginia.

Charles married Elizabeth Ridley of James City, Virginia. He was Justice of the Peace for Surry County (1645-71) and became High Sheriff May 6, 1673. Later Captain Charles Barham was appointed to the commission as justice of the House of Burgesses Governor's Council.

Robert Barham, one of Cahrles and Elizabeth's five children, was born 1678 and died in Surry County, Virginia married Elizabeth Clark. His will lists five sons and four daughters.

*James [heidleba@q-com.com]

Rev Daniel Barham had a sister Charlotte Barham born 14 Jun 1768. They

were the children of Charles Barham and Mary Harwood. Is this the

Charlotte you are looking for? Unfortunately, I do not have anything on

her or the other children. I only have their names and birth dates.

The children of Charles Barham and Mary Harwood are: Elizabeth Barham

born 23 Jan 1763; Rebecca Barham born 17 Apr 1764; Amy Barham born 19

Feb 1766; Charlotte Barham born 14 Jun 1768; Mary Hawood Barham born 19

Jan 1771; and Daniel Barham born 2 Dec 1773 in Surry Co, VA and died

about 1850 in Coles Co, IL. He married Levina Dunn. Charles Barham was

the son of Thomas Barham and Sarah Newsom. I am in touch with a Bil

Barham who has done more research on the family then I have and maybe he

can help you. His E-mail address is: billmail@clark.net Send him a

message and see if he has anything on your family.

*Bill [billmail@dark.net]

All I have for this Charlotte BARHAM is a tenuous marriage to William

CASE. I don't know of a Will or Bible record available.

I speculated in this relationship because of a couple of records.

1794, August 11 - Burwell Peeples to Daniel BARHAM

93L - 15S - 177 acres on South side Haw River

Witnesses: William Case, Mary BARHAM, Charlotte Case (was she Charlotte

Barham??)

*Guilford Co., N.C. Book 6, p. 21

Daniel BARHAM would have been Charlotte's brother. I wrote in my notes

section that the marriage happened before 1788 BUT I didn't write down why I

wrote that I'm sorry to say...

1794, August 16 - Indenture Charles BARHAM to William Case

J P Case

p.15

This letter bears no date, but it's evident it was written early in 1893 after James Paschal Case married secondly, 14 Dec. 1892 Louisa Ledbetter and later took her to his home in Illinois.

James Paschal Case, a native of this area, was married first to Susan Francis Harriss, Guilford County Marriage Bond dated 3 Aug. 1860. After the Civil War, he and his wife went to Coles County, Illinois where they settled and reared their family. susan Francis died, although her death date is not known among our relatives here.

James Paschal Case was 50 years old when he came home to North Carolina in 1892 for a visit with relatives. He began courting this pretty 22-year- old girl, Louisa Ledbetter (daughter of Thomas W. Ledbetter and wife, Sarah Jane Highfill).

"T.W." had some definite ideas. All through the years he had "laid down the law" to Louisa that she was not going to get married -----not to any man. But when a girl falls in love and sets her head to get married, there's not much anyone can do to stop her, even a father who is so dead set against it. Afterall, Louisa was in love, and she was twenty-two years old.

So that her father wouldn't suspect anything, Louisa wore her "every day" dress and was barefooted when she and Case went to his brother Nathan's house where they had previously arranged to be married.

When Louisa's father "T.W." learned of her marriage, he flatly disowned her. He forbade her to come back home and refused to let her have her own clothes.

The loving groom took his bride town and got her some shoes and cloth to make her some clothes before they left North Carolina to go to his home in Illinois.

Another unusual thing about this marriage: James Paschal Case was Louisa's great uncle. In other words, she married her grandfather's brother!

James Paschal and Louisa had two children. Several years later a cyclone struck their house and James Paschal and one of their children was killed.

Eventually, Louisa returned to North Carolina, but not until after her father, T.W. Ledbetter, had died. Louisa died here and was buried in Rockingham County.

This story was told to me many times by one of my aunts and was largely responsible for my interest in genealogy.

*A new -found relative, (Case line) Gladys Scarlette of Summerfield sent the following info. from 1880 Mortality schedule:

Land (or Lane), Miranda 54 m w Widowed NC NC NC Farmer died Dec. - General debility - resident of Guilford 54 yrs- Drs. Garret & Willis. Also, 3 more LANDs died of pneumonia in Nov 1879 with same doctors ; all born & parents born in NC; all lifetime residents of Guilford Co. Julina, 57 married; Nathan, 21single, farms;

Rachael 19 single.

(NOTE: in the handwriting of the old records Julina and Paulina are hard to tell apart, could this be Miranda's wife?, according to census she should have been about 49, also Nathan was their son, Rachel was probably, at the very least, a relative. They all 3 died in Nov. of 1879 of pneumonia and Miranda died the next month, (listed as widowed) with cause of death listed as General Debility. Although this needs further research, Miranda Land probably died with, if not from a broken heart.
